TELEVISION has often been called a passion killer - but now an Italian researcher claims to have proved it.



Couples who keep a TV in the bedroom have sex half as often as those who don't, according to psychologist and sexologist Serenella Salomoni.



Her team quizzed 523 Italian couples to discover how TV affected their love lives.



She found that turning on the TV turned off the romance for large numbers of couples.



On average, those who keep the TV out of their bedroom made love twice a week, or eight times a month.



That dropped to four times a month for those with a telly in the bedroom.



And for the over-50s, the romantic outlook was even worse, falling from an average of seven times a month to 1.5 times if a television was included among the bedroom furniture.





What was being shown on TV also had a marked effect on their love lives.



Violent films put half of all couples off the idea of a cuddle, while reality shows left a third of those questioned not in the mood for love.



Relationship experts say good sexual relations depend on couples communicating with each other, not sitting side by side watching TV.



And they warn that hours in front of the telly, whether in the bedroom or elsewhere, can leave men and women too tired, jaded and bored to have sex at all.



Italian men, who have revelled in their reputation as hot-blooded Lotharios, are no longer the lovers of legend, according to another survey of 1,200 men on the country's favourite beaches.



In the sample of men aged between 16 and 35, 87 per cent admitted that they lacked the confidence to chat up women and were "paralysed by the fear of being refused".



A Serenella Salomoni team spoke to men in Rimini, Viareggio and Gallipoli, on beaches traditionally regarded by budding casanovas as ideal hunting grounds.
