Re: There Will Be Blood They misled people acting like it was gruesome or something in a lot of the previews and shit written about it beforehand. More than one reviewer said it was a horror movie. Now...it's still true that critics generally know better than the average dickslap on the street, but lately I've been seeing a lot of what scientists sometimes call stupid shit. Where do they find these fucking reviewers? The same people are responsible for validating the careers of people like k.d. lang. K.D. LANG? NO.
Anyway, I liked the movie very much, even though it arrives at its ending like a car slamming into a wall. A friend who saw it first and hated it told me that it was "an epic story that adds up to nothing" which is exactly the kind of shit I despise. If you've seen No Country For Old Men, you know the way your stomach churns when the credits roll before the movies serves up the goddamn pudding. I don't feel that There Will Be Blood did the same thing. The confrontation between the preacher and the baron was very appropriate, somewhat climactic, very relevant and rather satisfying. But the ending was abrupt. For whatever reason, something I call the "nothing ending" has been fetishized by "serious" filmmakers in the past twenty years. It's like the Coen Brothers were afraid their movie would be too awesome if something....I don't know happened? At the end? I realize it was an adaptation of a novel, but there could have b- I don't want to spoil too much. Anyway maybe these directors will collectively move past that soon.
