| Should humanity advance into colonizing space? Or focus on restoring our own planet during the next century? There is no easy answer to this question because science, curiosity, and the events that are soon to take place are all conflicting forces. Thoughts? |

WE are still way off the time frame.

Rep Power: 3 | Re: Should humanity advance into colonizing space? The biggest obstacle here is funding. It really depends on what the costs would be to both research colonization in space, and the money needed to actually execute a plan. Now, from my limited knowledge, I'd assume that this is a huge longshot to actually occur, especially in the next say, 15-20 years. It looks right now that the best way this money could be spent would be to continue making the effort to make the Earth the place where our children's children can inhabit safely. |

Rep Power: 2 | Re: Should humanity advance into colonizing space? The closest galaxy would take more than our lifespans to reach even travelling at the speed of light. Several generations would have to live out their lives on some kind of travelling craft in hope that when their ancestors made it to a neighboring galaxy there would actually be a star powerful enough to sustain life like the sun, or not over powerful that it's too hot to bear, and then pray that there's actually a planet with the right atmosphere and ecosystem to accomodate human life. Seems like a shot in the dark IMO. We need to take care of what we already have or we are just going to create the same situation wherever we go.
Look at it this way...if you give your kid a puppy and the kid never feeds it, waters it, loves it and eventually the puppy dies and the kid asks for another one...would you really give that kid another puppy and expect it to be taken care of properly? He'll just think "Ah well if this one dies we can just get another one...big deal". He would have to show me that he's learned responsibility and if he hasn't the same thing is just gonna happen again. And the defenition of insanity is doing the same things over again expecting a different result. If people don't care here...why would they care somewhere else?

When you think about it, even if we wanted to, we can't.
We don't have the technology, resources or the information to do it. All they know about it the "Milky way"(our galaxy) and they can't go to all the planets in our galaxy. Planets like Venus, tey did play guess information on it and Mercury was a play guess information. But you know what crips me out. The fact that we are "ON" not in, it "ON". The fact that we are on the third planet away from the sun and we support life better than anyother planet.
And when you think about it, the said the sun is made of hydrogen and helium. If they haven't gone close to the sun yet, then how did they figure that out?
It's all just guess.
I really don't know if i should believe in God or science. |

that being said colonizing space sounds cool, but like Jason black said we dont have the technology, we need a pretty solid space station to travel in space, not to mention projectiles to counter the cosmic debris that will pummel the ship daily. or some sort of a .. yes i know its going to sound cheesy and super nerd but hey.. forcefield that being said, it would be cool if we could do it. |
