Rep Power: 5 | NFL's #1 draft pick is....Mario Williams HOUSTON -- The Houston Texans have signed North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams to a six-year, $54 million deal, making him the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft Saturday.
Of the $54 million, Williams is guaranteed $26.5 million.
Texans general manager Charley Casserly had cautioned earlier in the week that anyone concluding the team had decided on Southern California tailback and Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and was only using Williams as leverage was mistaken.
The choice of Williams by the Texans could dramatically alter the landscape of the early segment of the first round. The New Orleans Saints, with the second choice, have indicated they would snap up Bush if he fell to their slot. But the Saints had hinted, in general, that they might entertain trade offers for their pick.
The availability of Bush at the No. 2 spot would almost certainly elicit trade offers. Information from The Associated Press and ESPN.com senior NFL writer Len Pasquarelli was used in this report. |

Rep Power: 4 | Re: NFL's #1 draft pick is....Mario Williams The point was that you really couldn't name a playmaker on the Texan team. Carr can throw to Andre Johnson, but NOT FROM HIS BACK. Getting a defensive player doesn't really help that situation.
He'll be good (Williams), but the Texans won't do much more than they did this past year. |

Rep Power: 9 | Re: NFL's #1 draft pick is....Mario Williams Williams could have the best career ever for a DE, and if Reggie Bush has the greatest career ever for a RB, Williams' accomplishments would look like SHIT compared to reggie bush's, and make the texans look even dumber.
Bush can get you 14 points a game, at least.....
Williams will get u 1/2 of a sack a game, and maybe a fumble every 4 games...maybe...
Sorry fuck, he was getting his ass beat by them college OT's at the beginning of the year
But I think the draft was rigged....In an effort to bring some funds and shit to New Orleans...

Rep Power: 3 | Re: NFL's #1 draft pick is....Mario Williams Actually, the Texans made the right decision. If they weren't going to draft a o-lineman with the first pick then why not go defense. In their division you have three good quarterbacks, Manning,Leftwich, and McNair/Vince Young when his ready, you have to be able to rush the passer. Sacks don't show up the same in the stats column as touchdowns but think about the other things a pass rush generates, interceptions, alot of int's come from the QB rushing his throw because of pressure. You can't let a quaterback like Manning or McNair sit in the pocket allday and pick you apart. The Texans already have Dominick Davis who is not the playmanker Bush is but is a good running back, and has put up good numbers behind a suspect o-line. Defense win championships, they picked up two good defensive players and then picked up some o-line in the 3rd round. Plus with a new coach you don't want to have to worry about players holding out, they couldn't agree with Bush on a contract before the draft which means there could have been a potential hold-out. Kubiak wants all his players on time for camp so they can all start learning his system, no Reggie Bush may turn out to have a better pro career, that remains to be seen, but from a team aspect, they made the right choice. |

Rep Power: 12 | Re: NFL's #1 draft pick is....Mario Williams This wasn't a bad selection. Even though Bush has a super-high ceiling he also has a really low basement. He has never had to be a runningback alone, he played in a thunder and lightning running game. Secondly, he is a little small for conventional runningback standards. Can he pound the middle in the NFL? Questionable. Also, The Texans have Dominick Davis, who is a good player. Yeah he isn't a super star, but teams that get the first pick in the draft usually dont have super stars. Mario Williams provides a blue-chip defender who could be the best since Peppers. I personally woulda gone D'Brick or traded down, but this wasn't by any means a bad move. A little shocking, yeah, but not a terrible draft pick.
