Coast Guard cutter returns to Charleston after seizing nearly $1 billion in drugs
(Charleston-AP/CNN) Nov. 23, 2004 - The Charleston Coast Guard cutter Gallatin seized more than 29,000 pounds of cocaine, enough to fill four U-Haul trucks, during a two-month stint in the Caribbean. The Gallatin made its first seizure October 2nd and its 7th seizure November 13th.
A Coast Guard helicopter chased a suspected drug smuggling boat and fired warning shots to get its occupants' undivided attention, "It's an old maritime standard. Fire warning shots in front of a vessel. Hopefully you convince them you mean business and they'll stop."
The Coast Guard crew members says the smugglers work hard to evade law enforcement, "They do whatever they can to not get caught. They're trying to evade, but they can only go so far and then it's over."
Once inside the boat members of the Gallatin say they found bales of cocaine, "It was great. It's amazing. I'm speechless right now."
The cutter and a helicopter based in Jacksonville, Florida, stopped seven speed boats trying to smuggle more than 29,000 pounds of cocaine. Thirty-three people were arrested.
"Everyone in the Coast Guard will tell you this is what they work for all their careers. Some people get one bust maybe their whole career, and here we are with seven."
Their work did not gone unnoticed. Some of the Gallatin members were pinned for their perfection, and the cutter received seven new stickers for the seven seizures. Crew members says, "No matter how much we seize, we know we are doing it for our country, to keep drugs off the streets."
The Gallatin operated with two US Navy frigates, three other Coast Guard cutters and four foreign naval ships from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and France.
Those arrested will be prosecuted by federal prosecutors in Florida.
They said it was worth 928 million. Got damn!!
