Common Confirms Role of Green Lantern in Upcoming Justice League Film

Rumors have circulated for the past few months that Common had been cast in the role of comic book character Green Lantern for an upcoming feature film based on the superhero collective known as the Justice League. Now, speaking to MTV News, Com has confirmed for the first time that he will be taking on the role. “It’s a blessing really, to know that I could potentially be this superhero,” he told MTV. “Justice League itself is an honor, and Green Lantern is an incredible character to play. It’s a blessing to be associated with it.” Unfortunately, the film has been placed on indefinite hold because of the ongoing strike by the Writers Guild of America, so it may be some time before we get to see the Chi-town native battle the forces of evil. While plot details are scarce, Justice League of America will no doubt feature at least some of the main characters featured in the comic books; which included Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman. Unlike Superman or Batman, who were known to comic book readers as Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne respectively, several different fictional individuals have taken on the identity of Green Lantern throughout the character’s history. Com told MTV that he is especially proud to be playing an African-American version of the character. “Just being a black person, a black man, playing a superhero is an honor in itself,” he noted. The Green Lantern was known to sport a power ring that, along with the wearer’s will power, granted the person a variety of super powers. Last month, Daily Variety reported that Warner Bros. had put a hold on the film because of several obstacles, which likely means filming will not begin until the late summer or early fall.
