Well, you're actually in the best part of town for a music scene. Granted, its mostly college type rap - think stuff like Living Legends. I assume you'll be on campus or near it, that means you'll be in Oakland. Trust me, check out the O. Great place to eat. Should be in walking distance depending on where you're at. Theres a lot of record stores there too if you're into making beats/sampling. Oakland has a lot to see in the way of museums and such, its actually quite nice.

With that said, theres nothing really to go out of Oakland for. Downtown is a shithole, with nothing of interest. South Side is pretty nice though if you like the bar scene, also it has a few good music bars/clubs. If you like college rock type of stuff, theres a huge scene for that in Pittsburgh. Southside is about ten minutes from my old place (moved to Morgantown, WV) and it has a lot of things going on. It's a real mixture of cafes, bars, music and in general a huge melting pot of culture.
